Picture Frame - Assessment Task 1
The Joint Project contains four standard timber joints used in the furniture industry to help introduce students to a simple manufacturing and assembly project.
The first joint is a Dovetail joint which is commonly for the sides of drawers to connect to the front and sometimes used as a show piece to aesthetically display a piece of timber. The Dovetail joint is a strong structural joint and is known for it's resistance to pull apart. A series of tails and pins are cut into the end of a board which interlock into each other. Below are some pictures and examples of Dovetail joints and the last image is a video on how to make a halving dovetail joint.
The second joint is a Dowel joint which is commonly used for strengthening a joint by reinforcing it and can take the place of a nail, screw, mortise or dovetail. The Dowel is dipped in glue and forced into the hole and forced into the corresponding hole. A Dowel joint needs to be practised before attempting as the accuracy for the whole leaves no room for error when aligning the two holes. Below are some examples how Dowel joints and the last image is a a video on some helpful tips for aligning and drilling Dowel joints.
